Hazel Grouse

This woodland grouse likes to perch in trees. The plumage is a greyish-brown, but a distinctive black band at the tip of the tail helps identification.

The hazel grouse (or hazelhen) is found in northern Europe an in most of the Beyond area, except along the coast. It flies well, with the wings making a "burrrr" sound in flight.

Black Grouse

Lyrurus tetrix   –   Tétras Lyre

This beautiful grouse (male) is all black, with a white wing bar, red head patch, and a lyre-shaped tail. The female has grey-brown plumage and a slightly forked tail.

In the spring and autumn, the black grouse gather in large groups at communal display grounds, or "leks".
