The Serratula is a short to medium plant with a single flowerhead on a thick, finely hairy stem. The one we photographed, in May on the Plateau de Caussols, was 15 cm high.
Flower. The pale purple flowerhead has all tubular florets, and the bracts are shiny with rigid spine-tips.
Leaves. The basal leaves are elliptical or oblong, with stems; ours measured 50 x 15 mm. Base leaves form a narrow wing along the stem.
Habitat. Dry stony and rocky areas.
