Montdardier is a tiny place that has a fabulous old castle hidden in a forested domain of the village. This is a very small village without much of a center, but in a beautiful location surrounded by low, forested mountains and some open fields offering views to the farther mountains.
Montdardier is located south of Le Vigan and northeast of the Circque de Navacelles. When we first arrived in the village there was a flock of vultures soaring high overhead, drifting down from their homes in the Cévennes to the north.
The castle of Montdardier is private and not visitable. It's also not easily visible from the outside. The eastern gate of the castle grounds, just beside the main D48 road and the north edge of Montdardier is flanked by two classically medieval towers, but you can barely see the castle roof from here.
If you walk out past the south side of the village, going a ways out the road alongside an open field, there's a good view back across the village to the castle on its wooded hilltop.
Montdardier is very small, but it's nicely fitted out, with a good parking area for visitors, a couple of useful shops, and its very pretty setting.
The village has one café-restaurant and one "Multi-Services" épicerie that sells bread and groceries.
The deep canyon, Navacelles Cirque is just 15 km southwest of Montdardier.
